The business of Samuel Handley started life as a rope and twine merchant in 1830. It is thought to have been based in the Manchester area, possibly in Swinton. During the twentieth century it was acquired by a Mr Alan Titherley and became a part of the Titherley group of diversified Companies. The move towards the company becoming a supplier of manual handling products to the brewing industry arrived with the acquisition of R. Parker, who had been manufacturing and supplying cork dropping bags for brewers for many years. From this base, the company grew, with subsequent additions to the product range, gradually establishing itself as a leading supplier of manual handling equipment to the brewing and licensed trade. On the death of Mr Titherley, his group of companies was sold off and John Nicholson who had joined Samuel Handley as a buyer in 1983 acquired the business. In 1999 he moved it from Prestwich to Hyde near Manchester. By now the product range included trucks and trolleys, hooks, protective clothing and an extensive range of dray, cellar and warehouse foam pads.
On 1st October 2004 Murphy & Son Ltd acquired the goodwill, assets, trading name and intellectual property from John Nicholson. This forms an exciting opportunity for Murphy & Son Ltd to extend its products and services to its core customer base and explore a wider market. Thus creating an ever expanding ‘one stop shop’ for brewers and licensees to buy quality assured products, backed by technical expertise from one renowned supplier.
